Etsy: Made In Canada
9.21.2015
This Saturday, 33 cities across Canada will be hosting Etsy: Made in Canada pop-up shows. This little business of mine never would have happened without Etsy, so I'm super excited to be a part of this event, celebrating Etsy and all the amazing local artists you can find there. I'll be at the Burlington location, which you can find out more about here. I hope to see you there!
Summer Pop Up
7.23.2015
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. It's sure been a beautiful one here in Hamilton and the city has been buzzing with fun events. I've been super busy getting our new house in order ever since we moved, and my workroom is still in boxes, but when the cute boutique at the end of my street asked me to be part of their Summer Pop Up this Saturday, I couldn't say no. They're going to have vendors set up on both the street and in the shop, plus an espresso bar serving hot and cold drink, and live music. I hope you'll stop by and say hello!

HandMade Spring Market
5.07.2015
If you still haven't bought your mom a Mother's Day gift, this is the place to do it. Or better yet, bring her along! In addition to some amazing art and craft, there will be food trucks, damn fine wine and some of the best buttertarts I've ever had. And buttertarts are kind of my thing.
It's supposed to be a beautifully warm and sunny couple of days, and apparently I'll be set up in the greenhouse, so feel free to bring me cold drinks (and buttertarts) when you visit. Just sayin. ;)
Hope to see you there!
Show Time: Makers' Market
12.05.2014
My final craft show of the season is this Saturday! It's the Makers' Market at Christ's Church Cathedral in Hamilton. This will be the third year I've done this show -- it's one of my favourites as both a shopper and a maker. There's always a great selection of talented artists, it's a beautiful, cosy space and when you're done at the show, you can browse the lovely shops along James Street North with a Relay coffee in hand. Now doesn't that sound like a great Saturday? Seriously, you should come!
Don't live in the area? Don't worry, you can still shop online for one more week. Yay!
Show Time: Handmade Hamilton
11.28.2014
Hey guys! I'll be at the Handmade Hamilton craft show and sale at the beautiful Staircase Theatre in Hamilton tomorrow. A great chance to make a dent in your Christmas list and support local artists at the same time. I hope to see you there! xo
Show Time: Handmade Market
11.12.2014
Between road trips, home improvements, quilt class and sewing for the holiday season, I sure haven't had time to blog lately, but I wanted to pop in quickly to share the news that I'll be at the Handmade Market this weekend! I've been wanting to do this one for awhile now and I'm super excited about it! It's held at the beautiful Honsberger Estate in Jordan, Ontario and there will be over 75 artists, plus wine and beer to sip while you shop, food trucks and an entire "culinary barn"! Oooh it's gonna be good! Hope to see you there!
BLACK FRIDAY SALE
11.28.2013
It's true! I'm jumping on the Black Friday/Small Saturday/Cyber Monday/Whatever You Want To Call It bandwagon and offering free shipping worldwide all weekend. My shop has never been this full before (we're spilling onto page 3 now, people), so get out your list and start filling up that cart. The shipping rates will disappear at midnight tonight.
If you need an extra nudge, don't forget the Canada Post holiday delivery deadlines are coming up quick. This Sunday, Dec. 1st is actually the last day that international customers can place their orders and have them arrive by Christmas. Canadians and Americans have until Dec. 9th.
I also want to remind my local fans that you can find Dear Edna at craft shows for the next three weekends, starting with the Made By Hand Show at the Hamilton Convention Centre this Saturday, November 30th. It promises to be a pretty spectacular show, with over 100 handmade vendors, free photos with Santa for the kiddies, and... ME! Haha! All the usual Dear Edna fare will be there for you to browse in person as well as some extra special goodies, like pillows, embroidery and my Mom's crochet! I hope to see you there!
Home Sweet Home
10.25.2013

Today has been an adventure in calendars. I uncovered all manner of things shocking and awesome. First, as of this Sunday, I've been home from vacation for a whole month. How is that possible? I'm sorry I've left you for so long. In my defence, October was crazy busy. Business picked up literally the first day I got back with a couple big custom orders, I started a weekly quilting class, then there was Thanksgiving, Mike's birthday week, baking, shopping, planning and of course simply enjoying home sweet home. It's no wonder I haven't found time to sort through our 2000 vacation photos. It's daunting, to say the least. It will get done, eventually, I promise. You have Instagram, in the meantime.
And guess what else? Two months from today is Christmas. Again, how is that possible? I've been drawing up lists and cancelling plans left right and centre ever since I did the math -- I essentially have two weeks to get everything cut, sewn, photographed and listed in time. Deep breath.
On a more positive note, I have some exciting holiday-related news to share: I was accepted to participate in two craft shows this year! You'll find me and my wares at the Made By Hand Christmas Craft Show at the Hamilton Convention Centre on November 30th and the Makers' Market Holiday Edition at Christ's Church Cathedral on December 7th. Woo!

I also have a virtual table set up at Poppytalk Handmade's online marketplace from now until December 20th. I'm offering a special deal to Poppytalk visitors, so be sure to stop by and check it out.
All this talk of Christmas, and it's not even Halloween yet. Curses on me. I guess I gave up that particular holiday when I started a business. Just do me a favour, will you, and while you're dressing up as a sexy cat and snacking on candy corn, think of me listening to carols and piecing red trees with green reindeer. Haha! What a life. :)
One of a Kind Show Recap
4.10.2013
Oh boy, where do I start? It's now over a week since the One of a Kind Show ended and I'm still struggling to put the whole experience in perspective and to find the words to describe it all to you. On the Sunday, Carla texted, "Last Day! Can you believe it?" Response: "Yes and no." It was incredibly exhausting, both physically and emotionally, and there were times when I would've given a kidney to get out of that building, but most of the time it was exhilarating and the most rewarding experience I could ask for for my little biz... and it was all over in a flash.

Let's talk about the Etsy section, then. They certainly didn't exaggerate when they warned us that it would be "cosy". I mapped out the area at home beforehand, but I was still shocked by the space, or lack thereof, when I arrived. I'm not sure if you can tell in these pictures, but basically they had set up sets of four connected tables, with all four sellers sharing the space in the middle. That centre space was only one foot in width, people. For real. Being the creative types that we are, we made do and opted very early on to simply get to know each other really well. Like there was a choice. Ha!
Whether it meant watching someone's table so they could grab a coffee, analyzing customer behaviour, or entertaining each other when it was slow, we were in it together... and that was pretty comforting for this newbie. Heather from Needlings, Kelli from Little Big Words, Gen from Hen Jewelry, Sherie from deermayor, Michelle from Aide Bodycare, and the Etsy crew: I couldn't have survived without you. Thanks, ladies!
Despite the closeness, or maybe because of it, the whole section had a fantastic social energy that the customers seemed to feed on. I don't know how many times I overheard people commenting on the quality and originality of our work and what a refreshing addition it was for the show. Etsy was the place to be. But we all already knew that.

{Talk, laugh, fold. Repeat}
Another huge benefit for me from doing the show was all the amazing promotion that came my way. I think my guardian angel may have been doing double duty as a publicist this week! First, one of my aprons was chosen to be a part of the main display at the entrance. That means that every single person that came in those doors at least glanced at my apron. I had several people come by my table and ask to see "the apron in the front", so a big thank you to Marion Heintzman for including me in her beautiful display.
It was Marion who told me that I was featured in the Toronto Star the Saturday before. I found the online version immediately after I got home from move-in day and then had Carla rooting through the recycling for the print copy. This was another bestseller at the show and everyone that bought it was pretty tickled when I told them it was famous.
Finally, when I arrived on opening day, there was a little note on my table saying that Global TV had come by and selected one of my aprons to be on the Morning Show! Ah! Newspapers and now TV? Is this a dream? I tuned in the next morning while I got ready and low and behold, there it was! I'll admit I was a little disappointed that the hosts interrupted Valerie as she started talking about my apron, but I was still really proud to see it there and to be labelled as one of the top ten emerging artists at the show! (Here is the link to the video.)
All in all, it was a truly fantastic experience that was worth every drop of blood, sweat and tears that went into the months preparing for it. If the Christmas show wasn't an insane 11 days, I might consider doing it again. For now, I'm just going to focus on adjusting to a more reasonable pace again, tackling that awfully lengthy "after the show to-do list" and thoroughly enjoying Spring!
One of a Kind News
1.17.2013
I hope everyone is having a great start to new year! Mine has certainly brought a few surprises already, the main one being my acceptance to the One of a Kind Show this Spring! A few months ago, the One of a Kind Show and Etsy announced that they were partnering up for the Spring show to give some of the smaller Etsy businesses a foot in the door of the largest consumer craft show in North America. I couldn't see how I could pass up that kind of opportunity, so I applied, not thinking at all that I would actually get in. And then I got the phone call! My body has been juggling shock, excitement and pure terror ever since, and I don't expect that situation to change until April 1st. I have no idea how to prepare for 60,000 shoppers. All I know is, I better start sewing. So much for the relaxing winter I had planned. Haha! 2013... full steam ahead!
Hello December!
12.03.2012
What a fantastically crafty weekend! The Maker's Market went really well. I was impressed with the overall setup and organization, the atmosphere was cozy, the customers were friendly, and business was good. All in all it was a very successful day. Thanks to everyone that came out!
With the craft show behind me, and some extra cash in my pocket, on Sunday I headed out to Toronto for the last day of the One of a Kind Show. I won the tickets from Katie Walker, a local silkscreen artist who was a first time vendor in the Rising Stars section. A big thank you to her for that. I had a great time and saw a lot that I liked this year. I even came away with a couple gifts for Mikey J. My Christmas shopping has begun. Yay!
My online shop has been bumping all weekend too! There must be something that clicks for people on December 1st telling them to get shopping. It's a good thing too, because those shipping deadlines are closing in. U.S. customers have only until December 5th for made-to-order items and until December 9th for ready-to-ship. Canadians have a bit longer, but not much. It's wise not to gamble with Canada Post, so please get those orders in this week! All the information you need is posted on the home page of my shop, but feel free to email me if you are at all concerned about your item making it under the tree.
December is off to a great start for me so far! What have you all been up to? Decking the halls and trimming the trees? I plan on getting to that sometime this week.

Maker's Market Holiday Edition
10.31.2012
I'm excited to announce that I'll be a vendor at the Holiday Edition of the Maker's Market this year! There are two dates and locations — I'll be at the December 1st event at Christ's Church Cathedral. I attended last year as a shopper and really enjoyed the cosy atmosphere, friendly community and beautiful items for sale. I've been thinking about it all year and am so happy to have been given the opportunity to be a part of it. Mark your calendars!
My First Craft Fair
8.19.2011
So last weekend was the Beehive Craft Fair, my very first vendor experience, and I'm rather speechless about it. Literally. I've been mulling over this post all week, not sure exactly how to put it into words. Here goes nothing.
All in all, it was a fantastic event. First off, I have to hand it to the Beehive Collective. These ladies did an amazing job. I've never seen that space look more beautiful, we couldn't ask for more in terms of turnout and the sheer amount of positive comments about the fair in general are testaments alone to its success.
The Beehive should also be congratulated on their choice of vendors. Not to toot my own horn or anything like that, but quite the opposite; I felt incredibly honoured to be included with so many other amazing artisans. Their talent and creativity were truly inspiring and humbling and I loved having the opportunity to "talk shop" with many of them. I wanted to buy so many things!
But the icing on the cake had to be the customers. As an online business and a shy person in general, it's easy to hide behind my computer screen, but surprisingly I really enjoyed having the opportunity to interact with people. Everyone was really kind and complimentary (no ego-shattering horror stories here, thank goodness), and it was so interesting to see what products received the most petting. At the end of it all, I was really happy I took the plunge and I'm excited to try again, perhaps closer to the holidays.
A big thank you to my friend Carla, who helped man the table almost the entire time (that's one loyal friend), the Beehive ladies for inviting me to participate and for organizing such a great event, and to everyone that came out and supported me. You're the bees knees! (Haha! I couldn't resist.)
As a typical overachiever, although I did sell quite a bit, I was also left with stacks. That just means you can look forward to seeing a lot of new product popping up in my shop in the coming weeks. But for now, I'm enjoying some much-needed me time and getting the heck out of Dodge on a quick mini-vacation in Montreal!
À bientôt!
Show time
8.12.2011
The day has come for my very first craft fair! Ahhh! It's pretty nerve-wracking, to say the least. On top of worrying about all the tiny details, there's also the underlying anxiety over putting myself and my work out there, open for judgment. On the other hand, I'm super excited to interact with customers and meet the other amazing vendors at the show! You can read up on all the vendors here and here.
At the Dear Edna table you can expect all the usual favourites as well as the cute vintage totes I made for Sweet Trash last year and brand-spankin' new aprons, totes, tea cosies and pillows! Mike and I played around with a few different display options last night and took the shots above as a little sneak peak for you. Are you intrigued? Haha! I hope so.
If you're in the Hamilton area this weekend, please stop by the fair and say hello. The more friendly faces, the better!
Hamilton Happenings: August 2011
8.05.2011
Wow! I can't believe I'm posting the August edition of Hamilton Happenings. Time is flying this summer, so get out there and enjoy it while you can. Hamilton is making it easy for you with (free) festivals, fairs and street parties nearly every single weekend this month. Woo!Festival of Friends: Aug. 5-7 / Ancaster Fairgrounds / There was much hullabaloo over moving this festival from it's traditional Gage Park location all the way up and over to Ancaster. Not to fear, downtown dwellers, there will be free express shuttles leaving from the McNab terminal every 20 minutes. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing how they use the new space and of course the hot Friday night concert lineup featuring Sheepdogs (of recent Jimmy Fallon fame) and City and Colour.
Beehive Craft Fair: Aug. 12-13 / 118 James St. North / As if you haven't heard enough from me about this craft fair already, here I am pushing it again. I can't help it — I'm super excited (and super nervous)! There will be over 20 other talented craftspeople there in addition to Dear Edna, as well as an art installation by Amanda McCavour and DJ set by Donna Lovejoy. It kicks off during the James North Art Crawl, so after you say hello to us, you can peruse the many other galleries and shops that keep their doors open late that night. Sounds like a plan to me!
Augusta Block Party: Aug. 13 / 12-1 / Augusta Street / This little street lined with pubs and patios is my favourite place to grab a pint or a bite to eat in the city. It helps that it's right around the corner from me. Despite my slight bias, it's no lie that they threw an amazing party last year that had us dancing both in our seats and in the streets and I'm excited to check it out again this year... perhaps in celebration of surviving my first craft show?!
Dundas Cactus Festival: Aug. 19-23 / "The unofficial ‘homecoming’ event for any and all who have lived in the community... the festival runs for 3 days and includes 3 entertainment stages, event zones and over 100 street vendors."

One of a Kind Spring Show
4.06.2011
Now, for my weekend recap, starting with the One of a Kind Spring Show and Sale that I attended on Friday afternoon with my friend Carla. As you know, I'd been looking forward to this event since December, when I was too busy sewing orders to attend the holiday show. I'd been to the holiday OOAKS twice in the past and scored some great gifts and decorations. Plus, I had been hearing all week on twitter about all the bags of handmade goodies people were coming home with. To sum up, hopes were definitely high.
It was a much smaller event than the Christmas show. I heard someone estimate that it was half the size, and I tend to agree. It took us just over two hours to walk through the entire thing, as opposed to giving up after four hours without seeing everything. There was also a lot more clothing and jewellery, as opposed to home decor, and if you were in the market for kids items, you hit the jackpot. Although we couldn't resist at times pointing out things for the hypothetical bedrooms of our hypothetical children, we were able to breeze by quite a few booths based solely on the fact that we don't have children. I must say, I was a tad disappointed.
But that's not saying there weren't some truly unique and inspiring gems that made us stop, ogle and coo. Aside from the food (we filled up on samples as a substitute for lunch!), we both tended to enjoy the visual art the most. Here are some of my favourites.

Shuyu Lu / I think this was my top pick of the day, but maybe that's because I've been a little obsessed with embroidery lately. These are actually two sheer screenprinted layers, with the top layer embroidered. Genius!

Liscious / This eclectic booth held my attention for quite a while. I loved their modern wood pieces, especially the bird houses and pencil holders, but the paint-by-numbers-inspired paintings were perfectly retro for me. They also had some adorable Lego-man paintings that Carla was particularly taken with, but I couldn't find a photo of them anywhere.
Photo via Astylez Blog
Noelle Hamlyn / This artist was after my heart. She sews and embroiders pages of old books to form these stunning little dresses and textiles. I wouldn't have the faintest clue how to even begin making something like that. Amazing.
Photo via Rambling Renovators
Kelly Grace / I've been a fan of Kelly's for awhile now. She's another one of the many that I discovered at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition a few years back. I still love her cityscapes and fisher price toys, but I found myself especially fond of her new date night series pictured here.
Mizzonk / I found these modern paper cuts very interesting. The subtle bends in the first image above imply movement that I've never seen in paper-cut pieces before and the second one reminds me of a silhouette of a cityscape at night. Simplicity at it's best.
Biko / OK, so this isn't visual art. But Biko was one of the only jewellers that really caught my eye, so I thought they deserved a mention. Although I enjoyed their pendant necklaces with funky lockets, harmonicas and telescopes, the chunky chains and simple studs were more realistically "me".
I didn't end up buying anything, save some band aids and a bottle of water, but it's safe to say I'm kicking myself now as I remember all these fantastic artists. Sometimes you're just not in the mood to buy, I guess. There's always next time. See you in November, OOAKS!
If not otherwise stated, photos were taken from the OOAKS website. Thank you Jennifer of Rambling Renovators and Alanna of Astylez Blog for giving me permission to fill my photo gaps with your pics. It turns out I'm a rather shy blogger. I'm working on it.
Hamilton Happenings: The Beehive
2.28.2011
The end of February and March is typically my least favourite time of year. I reach my lowest lows due to lack of sunlight, fresh produce and general will to live. But last week an announcement was made that peaked my interest and excitement to unprecedented heights: a group of talented, enthusiastic young women have formed the Beehive, a craft and urban homesteading collective right here in Hamilton. In their words, they will be "focusing on handmade, DIY, and sustainability." I've been buzzing ever since! (Get it? Buzzing!)
Their first project is a juried craft fair this August 12-13th, corresponding with the James North Art Crawl. A few days prior to this announcement, I firmly decided that Dear Edna was not ready to participate in any fairs, markets or shows this summer. But it's pretty hard to resist when one sets up right in your backyard! I'm still on the fence, as all the pre-Beehive fears and misgivings still taunt me, but there are just as many positives urging me towards it as well. This would mark my very first craft fair, so if you have any advice, or pros or cons to add, please share. Pretty please! In the meantime, I better start building my inventory.
If you're interested in participating, you can find the application here.
I can't wait to see what else the Beehive has up their sleeves!
